Video clips from the Stanley apartment building played at the Surrey Six trial Monday showed three men in hoodies on the parkade level minutes before a black BMW exited the lot on Oct. 19, 2007.
Two of the men seen on the video at 2:08 pm are wearing identical clothing to accused killer Matthew Johnston and Person X, who were captured clearly on police surveillance video entering the Stanley’s front entrance about 20 minutes earlier.
The internal surveillance camera footage, which is not as clear as the police video shot during an unrelated drug investigation, was taken less than an hour before six people were slaughtered at the nearby Balmoral Tower in Surrey.
The first clip played and identified by RCMP video analyst Martin Schouten showed the three men in hoodies, followed by a fourth male, as well as a female who is expected to testify later at the trial.
The Crown submitted during its opening that Johnston, his co-accused Cody Haevischer and Person X, whose identity is shielded by court order, met at the Stanley where Haevischer lived, then drove over to the Balmoral in the black BMW and shot all six victims at about 2:40 p.m.
Schouten told Justice Catherine Wedge how he extracted video from the internal Balmoral surveillance cameras and created file folders with dozens of clips captured between Oct. 18 and Oct. 22, 2007.
He then created “story boards,” allowing each video to be played frame by frame, he testified.
The first clip played Monday showed two men wearing hoodies entering the Stanley’s front door about 1:45 p.m. on the day of the murders.
One in a white hoodie had a man purse strap across his chest; the other wore a black hoodie.
Their faces weren’t visible, but the video appeared to match up with the police surveillance video shot outside and played again Monday frame by frame that showed both Johnston and Person X walking towards the Stanley entrance.
Also shown was a clip of two men in black hoodies at the Stanley front entrance just before 3 pm, with their faces hidden.
The trial has already heard from a Mountie who watched similarly attired men and a third in a grey hoodie arrive in a black BMW linked to Haevischer, park underground and run from the lot towards the building around the same time.
Cpl. Greg Foster said the two in black went to the door, while the grey hoodied man held back. The two in black were also captured on police video.
Johnston, Haevischer and Michael Le are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder in the deaths of Corey and Michael Lal, Ryan Bartolomeo, Eddie Narong, Ed Schellenberg and Chris Mohan.
The Crown alleges the accused were all members of the Red Scorpion gang who targeted rival drug trafficker Corey Lal and ended up killing the others so there would be no witnesses.
Now in its second month at the Vancouver Law Courts, the trial is expected to last a year.
